Pit Firing

Pit firing requires a very simple set up – a cavity to retain heat. The bottom layer of the pit is filled with combustible materials like wood, sawdust and leaves etc. Bisque wares are then spaced out and drowned with more combustibles alongside minerals and organic matters (get experimental!). To allow the carbon and minerals to penetrate the porous clay body, the pit would be left undisturbed on fire till the fire has burnt itself out. Once it reaches room temperature, the pieces will be carefully removed, washed and polished. With a low firing range of 800-1000ºC, the fired artworks are not food safe.
